Hyderabad Metro Train Extension: Transforming Urban Connectivity

Hyderabad is on the cusp of a significant transformation in urban mobility. The Hyderabad Metro Rail network is poised for a massive expansion beginning in 2025.

The second phase of the project, led by Hyderabad Airport Metro Ltd. (HAML), will address long-standing connectivity gaps, particularly in the Old City. It will also extend the metro’s reach to new growth corridors and emerging urban hubs.

The most notable corridors planned under Phase 2 include:

  • Nagole to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (36.8 km): This corridor will provide a direct, rapid transit link to the airport, significantly easing travel for both residents and visitors.
  • Raidurg to Kokapet Neopolis (11.6 km): Targeting the fast-growing IT and residential hub, this extension will boost connectivity for professionals and families alike.
  • MGBS to Chandrayangutta (7.5 km): This long-awaited Old City Corridor, originally part of Phase 1, will finally commence construction in January 2025. It will extend further to Chandrayangutta, addressing historic connectivity challenges in the area.

The Miyapur to Patancheru (13.4 km) and LB Nagar to Hayathnagar (7.1 km) extensions will serve expanding suburban regions. These extensions will support Hyderabad’s rapid urban sprawl.

Project Funding and Implementation

The estimated cost for the second phase is ₹24,269 crore. A proposed 50:50 funding model between the Union and Telangana state governments is under consideration.

Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the new corridors have been submitted to the central government. State officials are actively engaging with the Centre to expedite approvals.

Demolition and land acquisition for the Old City Corridor are scheduled for late December 2024. Construction is set to begin in early January 2025.

Impact on Urban Development and Real Estate

The metro expansion is expected to have a transformative impact on Hyderabad’s urban landscape. Enhanced connectivity will reduce traffic congestion and pollution by encouraging public transit use.
